If it were up to me . . .

“Death is a billion-dollar business. They can’t even pass a law where it takes seven days to get a gun. Why don’t you have to go through the same kind of screening you do to get a driver’s license? It’s totally insane.”

– John Cusack

A break in my series on Understanding Happiness on iTunes U.  I cannot focus on happiness in light of the events in Colorado.  It is heart breaking.

A wonderful post on Common Dreams.

A wonderful video by Cheryl Wheeler.  Tell your friends to watch it. The Gun Violence has got to stop!

  1. I am dismayed by the violence in Colorado…I went from creating a gentle post about kindness….and then in the comments section wrote this….it’s long, but I’d like to share my thoughts…perhaps I’ll create a post with it….
“I’m very very tempted to create another post about multiple contributing causes leading to a potentially dire effect….after so many years of seeing SO many little boys, young ones, come through my classroom…with a passionate fascination with weapons, violence, action movies, violent or aggressive video games…and someday when they’re older….with enough “smarts” and access to sophisticated weapons and technology….150 million of those little boys may not/will not act on that…but several might…especially when there are “other” “contributing factors”, whatever those might be….and other people pay dearly if/when that happens. It’s a chance we’re taking…. I suppose maybe I’ll speak to this someday…because I’ve been watching it with concern for a number of years… Oh goodness….look at the energy here…one teacher writing to another….and shaking my head in a sense of dismay…”
and then I continued….as I said, I shifted from sadness to dismay
” Regarding the comment I made for PetalPusher, another school teacher….Phillip Zimbardo, the creator of the Stanford Prison Project, a respected Stanford researcher and professor…has a May 23, 2012 ebook….with concerns about boys who are growing up these days… I have a very deep respect for everything I’ve read by Dr. Zimbardo, so I consider his perspective to be worth listening to and considering. Perhaps, socially conscious “indignation” and “speaking up” might be appropriate kindling for that fire too??? “
